If you make something in Blender, it needs to be "cleaned up" before we can 3d print the object. Netfabb is supposed to be excellent for this purpose. There is a copy of Netfabb in X:/Computer Services/Mikitzel for installation Here is a video of how to clean up a file for 3d printing using Netfabb Basic
Here are prototypes for key chains for our school tuck shop. As I type this the green plastic just came in! (stay tuned for progress) Link to the obj files . Feel free to print and share.
Take a look at a tutorial on how to make a 3d key chain out of a png graphic! We are going to try and make a Notre Dame key chain we can sell at the Shamrock to buy more plastic for the 3d printer. The arc tool is very useful, see a tutorial here
We have a mascot that was printed on the 3D printer! Come see it in room 134. The joints in the arms and legs are articulated and the head turns as well. walking on a desk just hangin' around
Looks like google sketchup is better suited for 3d printing. It is easy to use too. Here is a great first tutorial about 3d printing with google sketchup. Our school 3D Printer is the Makerbot Replicator 2. Here is the makerbot official blog with all posts tagged for google sketchup.
We started looking at resources for 3d printing using Blender.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIAO1zS6oGY http://hackaday.com/2014/01/03/3d-printering-making-a-thing-in-blender-part-i/ We found out that Blender is probably overkill for 3d printing, Something simpler like Google Sketchup does a great job and is used by many people with 3d printers. Some of you already know a fair amount about Blender. so keep using it if you like!
